Sublimation vs. Silk Screen Custom Graphics:

What's the difference, and why is sublimation a better choice?

o Silk Screening: Most custom graphic clothing (t-shirts, sweatshirts, etc.) are decorated by silk screening. In the silk screen process, ink is applied through a screen to a finished garment (t-shirt, sweatshirt, etc.). Everyone probably has a silk screened t-shirt in their closet. Silk screen shops purchase finished garments (Gildan, Fruit of the Loom, etc.) and then apply the graphics to the garments with ink. There are limits on the number of colors, size, and location of the custom graphic decoration.

o Sublimation: Technical sports clothing is normally produced using the sublimation process. In sublimation, the graphics are applied BEFORE the garment is sewn together. The graphics are printed (in mirror image) on special paper that is the same shape as the fabric panels of the clothing. Then these graphic papers are placed on the pieces of blank fabric and put through a heat press where the special sublimation inks sublimate (go from solid to vapor) and the graphics are infused into the fibers of the fabric. Then the fabric pieces are sewn together into the final garment.

Disadvantages of Silk Screening:

Silk screening applies the ink on top of the fabric (the graphics are not a part of the fabric itself), so the graphics will eventually crack and can sometimes peel.
Silk screen graphics do not breath or wick moisture, as the ink is impermeable to air. This is particularly undesirable for garments that will be worn in hot weather.
Silk screen graphics will change the weight and feel of the base fabric. A large silk screened graphic will make the garment feel stiff.

Advantages of Sublimation:

Sublimated graphics will not crack or peel, since the colors and graphics are infused into each fiber, instead of applied on top of the cloth in a large area of stiff ink.
Sublimated clothing doesn't lose any of it's stretch or feel.
Most importantly, sublimated clothing can breath and wick moisture just as well as a non-decorated garment with the same base material.
Sublimation offers much more freedom with respect to colors, background patterns and large graphics. It's possible to match specific colors to the clients needs.
